Chinese Premier Li Qiang has called for international collaboration to build consensus on artificial intelligence (AI) development and governance. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2024 World AI Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance in Shanghai on Thursday, Li emphasized the urgency of in-depth discussions among countries to seize opportunities and address challenges posed by AI.
“In recent years, breakthroughs in AI technologies, emerging business models, and rapid expansion of new applications have driven a new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation,” Li stated. “At the same time, AI presents new challenges in areas such as law, security, employment, and moral ethics.”
Li highlighted China’s active role in embracing the intelligent revolution. He noted that the country has vigorously promoted AI innovation and development, prioritized AI security and governance, and implemented practical measures to advance the field.
“China launched the Global AI Governance Initiative and proposed a resolution at the 78th United Nations General Assembly to enhance international cooperation on AI capacity building, which was unanimously adopted,” Li said. “We have made positive explorations and contributed constructive ideas and solutions to the global development and governance of AI.”
The Chinese Premier expressed willingness to work alongside other nations to harness AI for global development and enhance human well-being. He called for efforts to deepen innovation cooperation, promote inclusive development, bridge the digital divide, strengthen collaborative governance, and ensure the benevolence of intelligence.
Approximately 1,000 international guests and representatives from organizations across industries, academia, and research institutes attended the conference. The event also saw the issuance of the Shanghai Declaration on Global AI Governance, underscoring a collective commitment to responsible AI development.
The World AI Conference serves as a platform for global leaders to share insights and foster cooperation on AI technologies and governance. As AI continues to reshape economies and societies, such collaboration is essential to maximize benefits while mitigating risks.
