Hong Kong Celebrates 27th Anniversary of Return to Motherland with Grand Festivities

On Saturday, Hong Kong kicked off celebrations marking the 27th anniversary of its return to the motherland with a grand launching ceremony at Victoria Park. The event signals the start of a series of festivities that highlight the region’s cultural vibrancy and its integration with the mainland.

John Lee, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), addressed the gathering, noting the dual significance of the year as it coincides with the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. “Since Hong Kong’s return to the motherland, and with the firm support of the country, we have navigated through challenges and continually forged new paths,” Lee stated. He emphasized the collective efforts of the HKSAR government, various societal sectors, and residents in advancing the success of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.

Zheng Yanxiong, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, highlighted the opportunities that integration with national development presents for Hong Kong. “With the country’s strong backing, Hong Kong can achieve better development by integrating into the overall national development,” Zheng said. He underscored the importance of enhancing international competitiveness and consolidating Hong Kong’s position in key areas while maintaining a free, open, and standardized business environment.

Tam Kam-kau, Chairman of the Hong Kong Celebrations Association, reflected on the region’s journey since its return. “Hong Kong has maintained prosperity and stability and has continuously shaped its modern identity,” he remarked. Tam praised the steady advancement and universally recognized success of the “One Country, Two Systems” framework.

As part of the celebrations, Victoria Park will host a series of exhibitions and performances from June 29 to July 2. These events will showcase China’s rich traditional culture and innovative developments. Provincial-level regions including Sichuan, Liaoning, Jiangxi, Shandong, Shaanxi, and Ningxia have set up booths to introduce local culture and tourism, offering residents and visitors alike a glimpse into the diverse heritage of the nation.

The festivities not only commemorate a significant milestone in Hong Kong’s history but also serve to strengthen the bonds between the region and the mainland, fostering a shared sense of pride and unity.
