China Celebrates 70th Anniversary of Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence
On June 28, 2024, China hosted a conference in Beijing to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. President Xi Jinping attended the event and delivered a significant address, emphasizing the enduring relevance of the principles in today’s world.
The conference, themed “From the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence to Building a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind,” brought together former political leaders from over 20 countries, representatives from more than 100 nations, international organizations, academics, and members of the press and business community.
The Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence—mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, mutual non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence—were first fully articulated by Chinese leaders 70 years ago. These principles have since become fundamental norms in international relations and have significantly contributed to global peace and development.
During the conference, participants reflected on the historical impact of the principles and discussed their continued importance in addressing contemporary global challenges. They highlighted how the principles facilitate peaceful relations between countries with different social systems and promote solidarity among developing nations.
The Beijing Declaration, issued at the conclusion of the conference, reaffirmed the participants’ commitment to upholding the Five Principles and building a community with a shared future for humanity. The declaration emphasized the need for mutual respect, sovereign equality, and peaceful resolution of disputes, urging countries to avoid antagonistic mindsets and unilateral actions.
China announced several initiatives to support Global South cooperation, including establishing a Global South research center, providing scholarships and training opportunities, and increasing imports from developing countries. These efforts aim to deepen collaboration and contribute to sustainable development across the Global South.
Participants praised China’s role in promoting peace and development, expressing readiness to work together to implement the consensus reached at the conference. They emphasized the importance of true multilateralism and collective efforts to address global issues such as climate change, security, and economic inequality.
The commemoration highlighted the enduring significance of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence in fostering international cooperation and advancing global progress. As the world navigates complex challenges, these principles continue to serve as a foundational guide for building harmonious and mutually beneficial relationships among nations.
