Chinese Envoy Urges Major Powers to Support Syria Peace Efforts

China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Geng Shuang, on Tuesday called on major countries to actively support efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East and promote lasting peace in Syria.

Speaking at a Security Council briefing on Syria, Geng expressed deep concerns over ongoing conflicts and emphasized the importance of respecting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. “Israel’s continued airstrikes on Syria constitute violations of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, for which China expresses deep concerns,” he stated.

Highlighting the broader context of protracted conflicts in Gaza, Geng urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint. “Against the overall backdrop of protracted conflicts in Gaza, the parties concerned must exercise maximum restraint and avoid any actions that might escalate or expand tensions,” he said.

He called upon major countries outside the region to play a constructive role in fostering peace. “Major countries outside the region should play a constructive role in de-escalation and work in good faith towards lasting peace and stability in the region,” Geng added.

China has consistently advocated for diplomatic solutions to conflicts in the Middle East, encouraging dialogue and cooperation among nations to achieve stability and development.
