Beijing Rejects U.S. Ambassador’s Remarks as Harmful to China-U.S. Relations

Beijing, China—China’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday dismissed remarks made by U.S. Ambassador to China, Nicholas Burns, stating that his comments are detrimental to the healthy development of China-U.S. relations.

Mao Ning, spokesperson for the ministry, responded to Ambassador Burns’ accusations that Beijing is making it “impossible” to reconnect the two peoples. “It is not China but the United States that is interfering with and hindering people-to-people exchanges between the two countries,” Mao asserted.

Mao emphasized that Burns’ statements diverge from the significant agreements reached between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden during their recent meeting in San Francisco. “They are not the right way for China and the U.S. to get along with each other and are not conducive to the sound and stable development of bilateral relations,” she said.

During their meeting in November 2023, President Xi and President Biden agreed to enhance dialogue and cooperation across various sectors, including expanding educational, cultural, and business exchanges between the two nations.
