China Refutes U.S. Criticism Over Punishment of ‘Taiwan Independence’ Separatists

China has firmly rejected comments made by the United States criticizing its new guidelines on imposing criminal punishments against diehard “Taiwan independence” separatists. At a regular press briefing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that using legal measures to address acts of secession is a common practice worldwide.

The U.S. Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller had described China’s actions as “escalatory and destabilizing.” Responding to these remarks, Mao Ning stated, “No external forces have the right to say anything about it.” She underlined that holding separatists accountable is essential for safeguarding China’s national sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

“Both sides of the Taiwan Straits belong to the same China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory,” Mao asserted. She pointed out that the real status quo is based on the one-China principle, and that separatist activities and external interference are the greatest threats to peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits.

Mao urged the United States to adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques. “If the U.S. side truly intends to safeguard regional peace and stability, it should honor the commitment of not supporting ‘Taiwan independence’ and stop sending any wrong signal to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces in any form,” she said.

She reaffirmed that China’s actions are lawful measures aimed at maintaining national unity and ensuring adherence to the one-China principle. Mao called for respect for China’s internal affairs, emphasizing that the Taiwan question is a matter of China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
