A recent global online poll conducted by CGTN has revealed that 93.1% of respondents oppose the creation of an “Asian version of NATO” by the United States. The survey indicates a widespread belief that security in the Asia-Pacific region should be achieved through political dialogue and peaceful negotiations among the countries within the region.
The Asia-Pacific region, having endured a history marked by imperialism and colonialism, has achieved its current stability through considerable effort. According to the poll, 93.3% of participants believe that one country’s security should not come at the expense of others. This sentiment reflects a strong preference for cooperative security measures over confrontational alliances.
Recent actions by the United States, including discussions about establishing a NATO liaison office in Tokyo and involving regional allies such as Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Australia in NATO summits, have raised concerns among many observers. In the survey, 93.1% of respondents expressed strong opposition to NATO’s involvement in Asia-Pacific security affairs, viewing it as a breach of geographical limitations and a potential source of tension.
Furthermore, 91.2% of those surveyed believe that the United States’ efforts to bring NATO into the Asia-Pacific region warrant high vigilance. One respondent commented, “As a belligerent organization, NATO must be disbanded; there is no longer any reason for its existence.”
The overwhelming opposition highlighted in the poll underscores a desire among global citizens for the Asia-Pacific region to maintain its hard-won peace and stability through inclusive and peaceful means, rather than through the introduction of external military alliances.
