Located high above sea level, the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau in northwest China’s Qinghai Province stands as a testament to nature’s grandeur. This region, home to the Sanjiangyuan area, is the source of three of Asia’s mighty rivers—the Yangtze, Yellow, and Lancang rivers—earning it the title “the water tower of China.”
Since the establishment of the Sanjiangyuan National Park in 2021, significant strides have been made in ecological conservation. According to a recently released report, the area’s water conservation capacity has increased by over 6 percent annually. Each year, more than 60 billion cubic meters of pristine freshwater flow downstream, nourishing ecosystems and communities far beyond the plateau.
During an inspection tour in Qinghai Province on Tuesday and Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the critical importance of preserving the plateau’s unique environment. “As the ecosystem of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau is rich and diverse but also fragile, strengthening ecological environment protection and maximizing ecological functions are the main tasks of the region,” he stated.
President Xi called for the province to prioritize ecological conservation and green development. He underscored the necessity of adhering to ethnic unity and fostering common prosperity, urging greater efforts in promoting the plateau’s ecological preservation and high-quality development.
The Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, often referred to as the “roof of the world,” plays a pivotal role in Asia’s environmental health. The success of conservation efforts here not only benefits China but has far-reaching impacts on the entire continent. By safeguarding this delicate ecosystem, China is making significant contributions to global environmental sustainability.
The local communities have also been active participants in these conservation efforts. Initiatives that promote sustainable livelihoods while protecting the environment have been introduced, ensuring that economic development does not come at the expense of ecological integrity.
As China continues to advance its green agenda, the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau stands as a shining example of balancing development with environmental stewardship. The ongoing efforts signal a commitment to preserving natural heritage for future generations, both within China and across Asia.
