Chinese Premier Li Qiang has called for joint efforts to further develop China-Australia relations, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and mutual understanding between the two nations.
During a meeting on Monday with President of the Australian Senate Sue Lines and Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives Milton Dick, Premier Li highlighted that although bilateral ties have experienced “twists and turns” in recent years, they have now returned to the right track—a result that was “not easy to achieve.”
“The legislative bodies of both countries play a crucial role in promoting our bilateral relations,” Li stated. He pointed out that the economic structures of China and Australia are highly complementary, presenting immense potential for cooperation.
Premier Li expressed hope that the Parliament of Australia would support practical collaboration between the two countries. He urged for the provision of a sound legal framework and a positive political atmosphere to facilitate this end.
Acknowledging the different histories, cultures, and social systems of China and Australia, Li noted that it is normal for the two countries to hold different views on certain issues. “The key is to strengthen communication and dialogue to enhance understanding and dispel misgivings,” he said. “Correct understanding should be built on the foundation of genuine knowledge.”
Li encouraged members of the Australian Parliament to visit China more frequently to gain firsthand insights into the nation’s development and changes. “China supports the legislative bodies of both countries in strengthening exchanges,” he added, underscoring the positive role such interactions can play in fostering mutual understanding.
In response, Sue Lines and Milton Dick expressed Australia’s appreciation for the positive momentum in the development of its relationship with China. “The Parliament of Australia is ready to strengthen dialogue and communication with China to continuously boost bilateral relations for the benefit of the people of both countries,” they stated.
