Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with Australia’s Leader of the Opposition Peter Dutton in Canberra on Monday, expressing China’s willingness to strengthen dialogue with both the Australian government and opposition to work towards new progress in their comprehensive strategic partnership.
Li emphasized the importance of the stable and continuous development of China-Australia relations, stating that it best serves the fundamental interests of both peoples and contributes to regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
“Since establishing diplomatic ties in 1972, China-Australia relations have been at the forefront of China’s relations with Western countries,” Li said. “Our fruitful cooperation has brought benefits to our peoples, demonstrating that our development is an important opportunity for each other.”
The Chinese premier expressed hope that all sectors in Australia would continue to view China’s development objectively, support the deepening of mutually beneficial cooperation, and contribute to the healthy and stable development of bilateral ties.
Li also noted China’s readiness to work with Australia to safeguard multilateralism, advocate for free trade, and address global challenges such as climate change.
Peter Dutton acknowledged the vital importance of the Australia-China relationship, stating that his party is pleased to see China’s development and prosperity, regards China as a partner, and hopes that Australia-China ties will develop steadily.
“The Australian opposition is ready to communicate with the Chinese side to enhance bilateral relations,” Dutton said.
The meeting signifies a mutual commitment to reinforcing the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations, aiming for new progress through open dialogue and collaboration.
