China Urges U.S. to Stop ‘Unacceptable’ Smears Over Ukraine at UN Meeting

At a United Nations Security Council briefing on arms supplies to Ukraine, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, Geng Shuang, urged the United States to cease using the Ukraine crisis as a means to smear China. Speaking on Friday, Geng labeled the U.S. accusations that China has supported Russia’s war efforts as \”unacceptable.\”

\”China is neither the creator of the crisis in Ukraine, nor a party to it,\” Geng stated. He emphasized that China has consistently advocated for a political resolution and peace talks to end the conflict. \”China has not provided lethal weapons to any party to the conflict and has always strictly controlled dual-use items,\” he added.

Geng highlighted that economic and trade cooperation between China and Russia aligns with World Trade Organization (WTO) and market rules. \”This cooperation is not targeted against any third party and does not run counter to international law,\” he said.

Pointing to ongoing trade between the U.S. and Russia, Geng remarked, \”As a matter of fact, since the outbreak of the war, the trade between the U.S. and Russia has also never stopped.\” He criticized the U.S. for \”hyping up\” the issue, suggesting it is an attempt to divert attention from the conflict and create divisions.

\”China urges the U.S. to stop using the Ukraine issue as an excuse to smear China and to impose unilateral sanctions and unreasonable suppression on Chinese companies,\” Geng asserted. He called on the U.S. to make genuine and positive efforts to end the war and restore peace.
