China Urges Foreign Powers to Respect Hong Kong’s National Security Measures

China has defended the application of Hong Kong’s national security law beyond its borders, stating that it conforms to international law and common practice. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian addressed concerns from several Western nations, urging them to cease interfering in Hong Kong affairs.

At a press briefing on Friday, Lin responded to criticism from the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, and the European Union regarding the extraterritorial application of the law. He emphasized that measures taken by Hong Kong police against individuals undermining China’s sovereignty are “reasonable, legitimate, and legal.”

“We express strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to parties blatantly defaming the Hong Kong national security law and intervening in the region’s rule of law,” Lin stated.

Lin highlighted the cases of Nathan Law Kwun-chung and others who have been involved in activities that he described as endangering national security and damaging Hong Kong’s fundamental interests. He asserted that their actions have undermined the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.

“The Hong Kong national security law aims to target a small group of criminals who seriously endanger national security, while protecting the rights and freedoms of all Hong Kong residents,” Lin said. “Its extraterritorial application is beyond reproach and aligns with international law.”

Lin called on foreign governments to respect China’s sovereignty and the rule of law in Hong Kong. “We urge relevant parties to stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs, stop emboldening elements undermining China, and stop shielding criminals,” he added.

The spokesperson’s remarks come amid heightened tensions between China and Western nations over Hong Kong’s autonomy and the implementation of the national security law, which was enacted in 2020 to address secession, subversion, terrorism, and collusion with foreign forces.
