China Grants Visa Exemptions to New Zealand Amid Growing Tourism Ties

China and New Zealand are poised to strengthen their bilateral ties as both nations embrace new opportunities in tourism and cooperation. In April 2024, Chinese visitors made up 10 percent of the 225,000 overseas visitors to New Zealand, second only to Australian tourists, according to Stats NZ, the country’s statistics department.

During a meeting with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon on Thursday, Chinese Premier Li Qiang announced that China will include New Zealand in the list of countries eligible for unilateral visa exemptions. Li expressed hope that New Zealand would reciprocate by providing more conveniences for Chinese citizens visiting the country.

“This move will not only enhance people-to-people exchanges but also pave the way for deeper economic and cultural collaboration,” Li stated.

The evolving travel preferences and increased collaborations signal a promising future for the tourism industries of both countries. Industry analysts anticipate that the visa exemptions will lead to a surge in tourism, bolstering economic growth and fostering mutual understanding between the two nations.

Li Qiang’s visit to New Zealand marks the first leg of his three-nation tour from June 13 to 20, which will also take him to Australia and Malaysia. The tour underscores China’s commitment to strengthening regional partnerships and pursuing win-win cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.

The enhanced cooperation comes at a time when both countries are seeking to revitalize their economies post-pandemic. With tourism being a significant sector for New Zealand, the influx of Chinese tourists is expected to contribute positively to local businesses and communities.

Prime Minister Luxon welcomed the initiative, highlighting the longstanding friendship between China and New Zealand. “We look forward to deepening our ties and exploring new avenues for collaboration,” Luxon said.

As the Asia-Pacific region continues to grow in global significance, such partnerships highlight the dynamic and interconnected nature of today’s world. Travelers, investors, and cultural enthusiasts alike stand to benefit from the strengthened relations between China and New Zealand.
