Xi Jinping: China Will Always Be Part of the Developing World

Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed China’s commitment to the developing world, stating that “China has always been a member of the Global South and will always belong to developing countries.” His remarks were made in a video speech at the 60th anniversary celebration of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on Wednesday.

Xi highlighted the significant contributions of UNCTAD over the past six decades, acknowledging its role in advancing South-South cooperation, advocating for North-South dialogue, and promoting the establishment of a new international economic order. He emphasized that the world is facing accelerated changes alongside new challenges to peace and development, calling for joint efforts to build a community with a shared future for mankind.

The Chinese president urged all nations, especially major countries, to practice true multilateralism. He called for an equitable and orderly multipolar world, adherence to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, and support for UNCTAD and other multilateral institutions in playing a more significant role.

Advocating for universal and inclusive economic globalization, Xi stressed the importance of improving trade and investment liberalization and facilitation. He urged addressing issues such as development imbalances and working towards a more just and equitable global governance system.

Emphasizing the historical opportunity presented by innovation and development, Xi called for the creation of an open, inclusive, and non-discriminatory digital economic environment. He highlighted the need to strengthen the governance of artificial intelligence within the UN framework, actively advance green transitions, and assist developing countries in embracing digital, smart, and green development trends.

As China marks the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, Xi noted that the nation is promoting Chinese modernization through high-quality development, which will offer new and greater opportunities for global development. “China will always be a member of the Global South and the developing world,” he reiterated.

Xi concluded by affirming China’s commitment to actively expanding imports from other developing countries, strengthening trade, investment, and development cooperation, and facilitating the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
