The government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) has revoked the passports of six individuals currently residing in the United Kingdom, a move that China’s Foreign Ministry describes as “justified and lawful” in safeguarding national security.
On Wednesday, the HKSAR Security Bureau announced the cancellation of passports belonging to Law Kwun-chung and five others who are wanted on charges including secession and collusion with foreign forces. These individuals are accused of engaging in activities that violate the National Security Law implemented in the HKSAR.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that the measures align with the National Security Ordinance and are legitimate actions to uphold the rule of law and defend national security. “Law Kwun-chung and the others have long been involved in activities that seriously jeopardize national security, undermine Hong Kong’s fundamental interests, and challenge the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ principle,” Lin said.
The spokesperson emphasized that Hong Kong affairs are solely China’s internal matters and cautioned against external interference. “We reiterate that Hong Kong affairs brook no interference from any external forces,” Lin added.
The revocation underscores the HKSAR government’s commitment to enforcing laws aimed at maintaining stability and security in the region. Observers note that the action reflects the authorities’ stance on addressing activities deemed harmful to both the HKSAR and the nation.
