China and Russia’s Irkutsk Region Strengthen Ties Amid Historic Opportunities

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Igor Kobzev, governor of Russia’s Irkutsk region, in Irkutsk on Wednesday. The meeting highlighted the growing collaboration between China and Russia’s Far East amid historic opportunities for cooperation.

Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, emphasized that as China advances its modernization and Russia accelerates development in the Far East, both nations stand to benefit from strengthened ties. He noted, \”Local cooperation is a vital component of China-Russia relations. The Irkutsk region, with its abundant natural resources and robust industrial base, has unique advantages in collaborating with China.\”

The Chinese foreign minister expressed support for deeper, mutually beneficial partnerships between provinces and cities of both countries. \”Enhancing local cooperation will bring tangible benefits to our peoples,\” Wang Yi stated.

Governor Kobzev acknowledged China as the Irkutsk region’s largest trading partner, with trade experiencing strong growth. \”We are eager to expand exchanges and cooperation with China in agriculture, energy resources, culture, education, and tourism,\” he said. \”Our goal is to attract more Chinese investment and provide an improved business environment for Chinese enterprises.\”

The meeting underscores the commitment of both China and the Irkutsk region to bolster economic and cultural ties, tapping into the potential of regional collaboration to drive development and prosperity.
