In a significant move to promote global unity, the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) unanimously adopted a resolution proposed by China to establish June 10 as the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.

The resolution highlights that all civilizational achievements are “the collective heritage of humankind,” advocating for the respect of cultural diversity and emphasizing “the crucial role of dialogue” in fostering world peace, common development, and human well-being.

By calling for “equal dialogue and mutual respect” among different civilizations, the resolution reflects the core essence of the Global Civilization Initiative. It underscores the importance of communication and understanding in overcoming global challenges and achieving collective progress.

Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, introduced the draft resolution at the UNGA plenary session. He emphasized that amidst the current era marked by multiple crises and challenges, the world stands at a historical crossroads facing instability and change.

“By proposing the establishment of the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations, China aims to harness the power of civilizational dialogue to eliminate discrimination and prejudice, enhance understanding and trust, promote people-to-people connectivity, and strengthen solidarity and cooperation,” Fu Cong stated.

He added that this initiative injects positive energy into the global effort to address common challenges, demonstrating “China’s firm support for multilateralism” and the work of the United Nations. It also highlights China’s responsibility as a major country in an era of unprecedented changes.

The unanimous adoption of the resolution signifies a shared commitment among UN member states to promote dialogue and mutual understanding among civilizations. The designation of June 10 as the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations will serve as a global platform to encourage cultural exchange and cooperation.
