Beijing, October 20, 2023 — The Chinese Foreign Ministry has urged the Philippines to cease efforts to permanently occupy Ren’ai Jiao, a reef in the South China Sea. Spokesperson Mao Ning reiterated China’s clear stance on the issue during a press briefing on Friday.
Mao’s statement came in response to allegations from the Philippine Coast Guard that the Chinese Coast Guard had obstructed the medical evacuation of a sick member of the Philippine armed forces from the reef, which China refers to as part of its Nansha Qundao.
“If the Philippine side informs the Chinese side in advance, China can allow the delivery of necessary living materials to its illegally grounded warship at Ren’ai Jiao and facilitate the evacuation of relevant personnel,” Mao stated. “However, the Philippine side should not use this as a pretext to deliver construction materials to the warship in an attempt to permanently occupy Ren’ai Jiao.”
The incident highlights ongoing tensions in the South China Sea, where multiple nations have overlapping territorial claims. China maintains that its actions are within its sovereign rights, while the Philippines asserts its own claims over the area.
Ren’ai Jiao, known internationally as Second Thomas Shoal, has been a point of contention since the Philippines grounded a warship there in 1999. China has repeatedly called for the removal of the vessel, deeming its presence illegal.
The South China Sea remains a strategic and resource-rich region with significant implications for international trade and security. Diplomatic efforts continue as nations seek to resolve disputes and promote stability in the area.
