Wang Yi Calls for China-Russia Unity to Strengthen the Global South

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called for enhanced unity and cooperation between China and Russia to bolster the development of the Global South. Speaking via video link at the China-Russia High-level Think Tank Forum on Thursday, Wang emphasized the importance of collaboration in promoting a multipolar world and fostering true multilateralism.

Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted the need for both nations to firmly safeguard the international system with the United Nations at its core and to uphold an international order based on international law. He urged China and Russia to strengthen multilateral coordination and cooperation to address global challenges effectively.

“China and Russia should support each other, adhere to open cooperation, and engage in exchanges to learn from one another,” Wang said. He underscored the principle of non-alliance, non-confrontation, and not targeting any third party, advocating for the deepening of political mutual trust between the two countries.

The China-Russia High-level Think Tank Forum, jointly organized by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Russian International Affairs Council, has been held annually since 2018. This year’s forum focused on China-Russia cooperation in the new era and marked the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Wang’s remarks come at a time when the Global South is seeking greater representation and influence in international affairs. By uniting their efforts, China and Russia aim to champion the interests of developing countries and contribute to a more balanced and inclusive global governance structure.
