Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad in Beijing on Wednesday, marking a significant step in strengthening the strategic partnership between China and Syria. Wang Yi emphasized that the two countries have formed a relationship characterized by mutual trust and support.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, congratulated Syria on its return to the League of Arab States (AL). He noted that the establishment of a strategic partnership between China and Syria last September has set a new direction for bilateral relations.
“China supports Syria in safeguarding its national independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” Wang Yi stated. “We stand firmly with the Syrian government in its efforts to maintain national security, stability, and development.”
The Chinese Foreign Minister expressed appreciation for Syria’s steadfast support on issues concerning China’s core interests. He affirmed that China will continue to advocate for Syria in multilateral forums such as the United Nations Security Council.
Wang Yi highlighted the significance of Syria’s return to the AL, expressing confidence that it will contribute constructively to the development of China-Arab relations. “China-Syria relations will gain new impetus,” he added.
Faisal Mekdad conveyed Syria’s full support for the global initiatives proposed by China, expressing willingness to collaborate in building an international order based on mutual respect, equality, and opposition to hegemony.
“Syria unwaveringly adheres to the one-China principle,” Mekdad affirmed. “Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory, a fact that cannot be denied or challenged.”
