Xizang’s Tibetan Medicine Industry Embraces Modernization After 73 Years of Progress

As Xizang Autonomous Region marks the 73rd anniversary of its peaceful liberation, the region is witnessing remarkable advancements in modernization, particularly in the traditional Tibetan medicine industry. At the forefront of this transformation is Bu Tsamjo, a team leader in the production department of a leading Tibetan medicine company.

Bu Tsamjo, recently awarded the prestigious May Day national labor medal, recalls the early days when manufacturing and packaging relied heavily on manual labor. “When I started working at the plant, everything was done by hand,” she reflects. “Now, with mechanization and automation, we can package 38,000 pills daily.”

The shift towards modernization is not just enhancing production efficiency but also standardizing and regulating the production of Tibetan medicines on a commercial scale. According to a white paper issued by China’s State Council Information Office last November, Xizang boasts 49 public institutions dedicated to Tibetan medicine. As of early 2022, an impressive 94.4 percent of township health centers and 42.4 percent of village health clinics in the region offer Tibetan medicine services.

The advancements in the Tibetan medicine industry are a microcosm of Xizang’s overall development. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 2012, the region has achieved significant progress in economic growth, improvement of people’s livelihoods, environmental protection, and the preservation and development of Tibetan culture.

Today, various businesses are flourishing across the snow-covered plateau. People of all ethnic groups in Xizang enjoy equal access to development opportunities, contributing to the region’s dynamic economic landscape. The modernization drive not only boosts the local economy but also helps in preserving traditional practices by integrating them with contemporary technologies.

“Our goal is to bring the benefits of Tibetan medicine to more people while maintaining our rich cultural heritage,” says Bu Tsamjo. “Modernization doesn’t mean losing our traditions; it’s about enhancing them for future generations.”

As Xizang continues on its path of development, the harmonious blend of tradition and innovation stands as a testament to the region’s dedication to progress while honoring its unique cultural identity.
