Xi Jinping Highlights Tourism’s Role in Strengthening China-U.S. Relations

Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent a heartfelt message to the 14th China-U.S. Tourism Leadership Summit held in Xi’an, the historical city in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province. Marking a significant moment in China-U.S. relations, Xi emphasized the pivotal role of tourism in bridging cultures and strengthening ties between the two nations.

In his message, President Xi noted that 2023 marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States. “The foundation of China-U.S. relations was laid by the people, the door of China-U.S. relations was opened by the people, the stories of China-U.S. relations are written by the people, and the future of China-U.S. relations will also be created by the two peoples,” he stated, highlighting the indispensable role of the people in shaping bilateral relations.

Xi underscored tourism as an essential bridge for mutual understanding and interaction between the Chinese and American people. He extended a warm invitation to U.S. tourists to visit China and experience its rich culture and heritage firsthand. “Tourism allows people to interact and know each other,” Xi said, expressing hope that increased travel would foster deeper connections.

The Chinese president called on individuals from all walks of life in both countries to seize the opportunity presented by the summit to deepen exchanges and build consensus. He advocated for enhanced cooperation in tourism to promote people-to-people exchanges and continue the longstanding friendship between China and the United States.

Xi also mentioned the “San Francisco vision,” expressing his desire to turn this vision into reality through strengthened tourism cooperation. The 14th China-U.S. Tourism Leadership Summit serves as a platform to advance these goals, bringing together leaders and stakeholders from both nations to discuss ways to rejuvenate and expand tourism interaction.

The summit in Xi’an, a city famed for its ancient history and as the starting point of the Silk Road, symbolizes the enduring connection between East and West. As global travel gradually resumes, the emphasis on tourism signifies a mutual commitment to rekindle connections and foster goodwill between the two countries.
