The Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) commenced joint military drills surrounding the island of Taiwan at 7:45 a.m. on Thursday. The exercises are part of a strategic operation code-named Joint Sword-2024A and will continue through Friday.

The drills are taking place in the Taiwan Strait, as well as the northern, southern, and eastern regions surrounding the island of Taiwan. Additionally, areas around the islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu, and Dongyin are involved in the operation.

According to Li Xi, spokesperson for the theater command, the exercises involve coordinated efforts from multiple branches of the military, including the army, navy, air force, and rocket force. The operation aims to enhance joint combat readiness and strategic deterrence capabilities.

“These drills are a routine exercise organized in accordance with our annual plan,” Li Xi stated. “They test our ability to conduct joint operations under realistic combat conditions.”

The exercises underscore the PLA’s commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Observers note that such drills are significant for maintaining stability in the region and ensuring preparedness in the face of evolving security challenges.
