Astana, Kazakhstan – Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states to uphold unity, cooperation, and inclusiveness to strengthen the organization during the SCO Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs meeting held on Tuesday in Astana.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, emphasized the significant progress the SCO has made over the past 23 years. “Through our joint efforts, the SCO has become a security barrier, a bridge of cooperation, and a bond of friendship, serving as a constructive force in the region,” he stated.
Highlighting the challenges posed by certain countries pursuing hegemony and engaging in interference and suppression, Wang noted that these actions aim to undermine the strategic independence of the “Global South” and obstruct the revitalization of emerging markets and developing countries.
“In the face of these challenges, we must uphold the ‘Shanghai Spirit’ and work together to safeguard our common interests,” Wang urged. He called on member states to respond collectively to various challenges and to uphold fairness and justice on the international stage.
To further strengthen the SCO, Wang Yi put forward four proposals, though the specifics of these proposals were not detailed during the meeting. His remarks underscored China’s commitment to fostering collaboration and mutual support among SCO members, reinforcing the organization’s role in promoting regional stability and development.
The meeting in Astana brought together foreign ministers from SCO member states to discuss strategies for enhancing cooperation and addressing shared concerns. The SCO, founded in 2001, comprises China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, and Pakistan, and focuses on regional security, economic cooperation, and cultural exchanges.
As global dynamics evolve, Wang Yi’s call for unity and inclusiveness resonates with the SCO’s fundamental principles, encouraging member nations to strengthen their partnership and collectively navigate the complexities of the international landscape.
