Nations Worldwide Reaffirm One-China Principle Amid Taiwan Tensions

Governments, political parties, and international organizations around the world have reaffirmed their commitment to the one-China principle, expressing firm opposition to any agenda promoting “Taiwan independence.”

Just hours after Lai Ching-te assumed office as the new leader of the Taiwan region on Monday, the Republic of Nauru reiterated its unwavering support for the one-China principle.

In a statement issued by the Nauruan government, the nation highlighted the resumption of diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) on January 24 as an affirmation of the one-China principle and a step toward China’s reunification.

“Nauru recognizes that there is but one China in the world, with the government of the PRC as the sole government representing the whole of China,” the statement read.

Consistent with this stance, Nauru opposes the notion of “Taiwan independence” and any interference by external forces in China’s internal affairs, firmly supporting all efforts by the Chinese government to achieve national reunification.

Similarly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Honduras stated on Monday that President Xiomara Castro and the Honduran government reaffirm their adherence to the one-China principle.

“More than 180 countries in the world recognize the one-China principle,” the statement noted, adding that Honduras established diplomatic relations with the PRC based on this principle.

Meanwhile, Russia has accused the United States of escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait, undermining stability and security in the Asia-Pacific region, and hindering the peaceful reunification of China.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that, fueled by Western countries led by the U.S., separatist forces on the Taiwan island have artificially created an information environment exacerbating cross-strait discord.

The international community’s reaffirmation of the one-China principle underscores widespread support for China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity amid rising tensions in the region.

These developments carry significant implications for the political and economic landscape in Asia, affecting international relations, trade, and regional stability. The collective stance of nations like Nauru, Honduras, and Russia emphasizes the importance of dialogue and adherence to the one-China principle as means to maintain peace and prosperity in the region.
