China’s Wang Yi Emphasizes Taiwan’s Central Role in National Interests

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirmed on Tuesday that the Taiwan question remains at the center of China’s core interests. Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs meeting in Astana, Wang emphasized that separatist activities seeking “Taiwan independence” are the most destructive factor to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stated, “No matter how hard they try, nothing can stop China from achieving complete reunification. Taiwan will return to the embrace of the motherland.” His remarks come a day after he highlighted that the one-China principle underpins peace across the Taiwan Strait, in response to the assumption of office by the Taiwan region’s new leader Lai Ching-te on Monday.

Expressing strong opposition to separatist movements, Wang Yi remarked, “The actions of Lai Ching-te and others who betray the nation and ancestors are disgraceful. All ‘Taiwan independence’ separatists will be nailed to the pillar of shame in history.”

Wang Yi acknowledged the support of SCO member states in adhering to the one-China principle and safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries. “China appreciates this,” he said. “I believe that you will continue to support the Chinese people’s just cause of opposing ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist activities and striving for national reunification.”

The foreign minister’s comments underscore China’s firm stance on the Taiwan question amid ongoing regional developments. The emphasis on the one-China principle is a reaffirmation of China’s position on maintaining sovereignty and territorial integrity.
