SCO Reaffirms One-China Principle, Opposes “Taiwan Independence”

Beijing, China — Zhang Ming, secretary-general of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), has reiterated the organization’s firm adherence to the one-China principle and opposition to any form of “Taiwan independence” secession.

In an interview with Xinhua on Monday, Zhang highlighted the SCO’s commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the SCO Charter. “The SCO respects the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of its member states, and earnestly safeguards their security and development interests,” he stated.

Emphasizing that there is only one China and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, Zhang declared, “The Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. The Taiwan question is China’s internal affair.”

Zhang affirmed that the SCO will continue to firmly support the Chinese government’s stance on the Taiwan question. “We will adhere to the one-China principle, abide by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758, and oppose ‘Taiwan independence’ secession in any form,” he said.

The SCO, founded in 2001, is a Eurasian political, economic, and security alliance that promotes cooperation among its member states. The organization includes China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
