China and Russia Commit to Strengthening Regional Security at SCO Meeting

Astana, Kazakhstan — China and Russia have pledged to strengthen cooperation to safeguard regional security and stability, as senior diplomats from both nations met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs meeting.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday. Wang emphasized China’s readiness to work closely with Russia and other SCO member states to promote regional development and steer global governance toward greater fairness and reasonableness.

Recalling the successful state visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to China, Wang noted that China is keen to collaborate with Russia in marking the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. He highlighted the importance of implementing new consensuses reached by the two heads of state to elevate China-Russia relations to new heights.

Firm Stance on the Taiwan Question

Addressing the Taiwan question, Wang reiterated that regardless of changes in the situation, Taiwan remains an integral part of China. He expressed confidence in the historical trend that China will eventually and inevitably achieve reunification.

Wang commended President Putin’s clear position on the Taiwan issue and expressed hope that Russia would continue to provide firm support to China on matters concerning China’s core interests.

Advancing SCO Unity and Cooperation

Under the current global circumstances, Wang advocated for a highly united SCO that embodies win-win cooperation. He asserted that such unity not only aligns with the common interests of all member states but also reflects the trend toward a multipolar world.

Lavrov affirmed Russia’s willingness to work with China to maintain exchanges at all levels and enhance cooperation across various fields. On the Taiwan question, he reiterated Russia’s clear stance in supporting China’s goal of national reunification.

Dialogue on Global Issues

The two sides also exchanged views on issues of mutual concern, including the situation in the Middle East, the Ukraine crisis, and developments on the Korean Peninsula. Both ministers underscored the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration in addressing these challenges.
