The China Coast Guard (CCG) announced on Wednesday that it issued warnings to Philippine vessels that allegedly entered Chinese waters in the South China Sea without authorization.
Protecting Sovereignty in the South China Sea
According to the CCG, the actions of the Philippine vessels infringed upon China’s sovereignty and violated international law. The CCG urged the Philippines to cease activities that it deems illegal and to respect China’s territorial claims.
Recent months have seen an increase in such incidents, with the CCG citing multiple encounters with Philippine vessels near contested areas. On April 30, the CCG reportedly expelled a Philippine Coast Guard ship and another official vessel from waters adjacent to Huangyan Island.
Escalating Tensions and Regional Stability
In another incident on March 23, the CCG obstructed a Philippine supply vessel and two Coast Guard ships that were attempting to deliver construction materials to a military ship grounded at Ren’ai Jiao. The CCG stated that it will continue to conduct law enforcement activities within what it considers its jurisdiction and to safeguard China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights.
The involvement of non-governmental organizations has further complicated the situation. Atin Ito, an organization affiliated with the Akbayan Party in the Philippines, has been active in the South China Sea, undertaking activities that China views as infringements on its sovereignty. Analysts suggest that these actions are coordinated with the Philippine Coast Guard and are accompanied by media coverage.
Analyzing the Underlying Factors
Experts point to a shift in the Philippines’ approach since President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. took office in 2022. Some analysts believe that the increased maritime activities are intended to divert public attention from domestic challenges such as inflation, unemployment, and social issues.
In 2002, China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) members signed the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, committing to resolve disputes through peaceful means and direct negotiations. Observers express concern that the recent incidents may erode mutual trust and hinder progress toward a binding Code of Conduct.
Maintaining stability in the South China Sea is of significant importance to the region and the global community. Continued dialogue and adherence to international agreements are critical to managing tensions and fostering cooperation.
