Xi Jinping Highlights Strongest Ever China-Hungary Relations During Budapest Visit

On Thursday, during a state visit to Budapest, Chinese President Xi Jinping declared that China-Hungary relations are currently at their strongest point in history. Speaking at the Sandor Palace alongside Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok, Xi emphasized the deep-rooted traditional friendship between the two nations and the fruitful cooperation they have achieved across various fields.

“The traditional friendship has taken deep roots in the hearts of our people, and cooperation in various areas has yielded significant outcomes,” Xi stated. He highlighted how the bilateral relationship has withstood the evolving international landscape, evolving from a continental friendship to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

President Xi expressed his eagerness to foster a strong working relationship and personal friendship with President Sulyok. He underscored the importance of increasing exchanges and communication on mutual interests to jointly promote the high-level development of bilateral relations.

Reflecting on history, Xi noted that Hungary was one of the first countries to recognize the People’s Republic of China in 1949. “Since the establishment of our diplomatic ties, China and Hungary have always respected each other, treated each other as equals, and pursued mutual benefits,” he remarked.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Hungary, adding significance to Xi’s visit, which is the final leg of his European tour this week.

During their discussions, Xi stressed that the China-Hungary friendship is grounded in mutual respect and is not aimed at any third party nor influenced by external pressures. “We should continue to treat each other as equals, follow development paths suited to our national conditions, and take our future into our own hands,” he said.

Xi called for both countries to adhere to mutual trust and assistance, understanding and supporting each other in safeguarding sovereignty, security, and development interests. He also advocated for continued win-win cooperation, upholding fairness and justice, and standing on the right side of history.
