In a significant move to strengthen bilateral ties, China and Hungary have elevated their relationship to an “all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership for the new era.” The announcement came during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Hungary from May 8 to 10, 2024, at the invitation of Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok and Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
During the visit, President Xi held comprehensive talks with President Sulyok and Prime Minister Orban, where they reviewed the strong foundation of China-Hungary relations and the long-standing friendship between their peoples. The leaders engaged in in-depth discussions on bilateral ties, as well as international and regional issues of mutual interest, reaching a broad consensus.
Enhancing Strategic Trust and Cooperation
Both sides expressed satisfaction with the fruitful outcomes of their practical and friendly cooperation over the years. They agreed to maintain high-level exchanges, strengthen political mutual trust, and deepen cooperation for mutual benefit. The elevation of their partnership signifies a commitment to keeping bilateral relations at a high level and bringing more benefits to both nations.
Hungary reaffirmed its respect for China’s significant achievements in economic and social development and expressed hope that under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, China will continue to build a modern socialist country in all respects. China, in turn, applauded Hungary’s accomplishments in national development and commended its peaceful, open, and pragmatic foreign policy.
Commitment to the Belt and Road Initiative
The two countries acknowledged the success of their cooperation within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). They emphasized that the BRI has played a positive role in promoting economic development and improving people’s livelihoods in both nations. Committed to enhancing synergy between the BRI and Hungary’s “Eastern Opening” policy, both sides aim to pursue deeper and more substantive progress in high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.
A highlight of this cooperation is the Hungary-Serbia Railway project, a landmark under the BRI and a flagship project of China-CEEC (Central and Eastern European Countries) Cooperation. Both countries expressed willingness to actively promote the construction of the Hungarian section of the railway, enhancing connectivity in Central and Eastern Europe.
Expanding Economic and Cultural Ties
China and Hungary agreed to expand cooperation in emerging fields such as clean energy, artificial intelligence, mobile communication technology, and nuclear energy and technology. They plan to strengthen exchanges in agriculture, finance, scientific and technological innovation, education, culture, and tourism.
The two nations will also work to promote people-to-people exchanges, supporting activities commemorating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2024. They aim to deepen mutual understanding through cultural exchanges, language learning, and cooperation in sports, film, and media.
Strengthening International Cooperation
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding international systems with the United Nations at its core and upholding international law. They underlined the importance of settling disputes peacefully through dialogue and consultations and emphasized their dedication to global security and peace.
Hungary expressed particular attention to China’s Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilization Initiative. As a member of the European Union, Hungary aims to contribute to the development of the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership.
Looking Ahead
The upgrade of China-Hungary relations to an all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership marks a significant milestone in their bilateral relations. It reflects a mutual commitment to deepening cooperation across various fields and contributes to regional stability and prosperity.
