President Xi Jinping arrived in Budapest on Wednesday, embarking on his first state visit to Hungary at the invitation of Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok and Prime Minister Viktor Orban. His arrival coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Hungary, marking a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship.
As Xi’s plane entered Hungarian airspace, it was escorted by Hungarian fighter jets, symbolizing a warm welcome. Upon landing, Prime Minister Orban and his wife greeted President Xi at the airport. En route to his hotel, enthusiastic crowds waved Chinese and Hungarian flags, reflecting the cordial ties between the two nations.
In a written speech upon arrival, President Xi expressed his anticipation for meetings with President Sulyok, Prime Minister Orban, and other Hungarian leaders. He emphasized that China and Hungary are “good friends and good partners of mutual trust” and expressed his desire to “jointly outline a new blueprint for cooperation and development,” aiming to elevate the China-Hungary relationship to new heights.
Hungary was among the first countries to recognize the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Over the decades, the two nations have cultivated a strong partnership, culminating in the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2017. This visit underscores the ongoing commitment to deepen collaboration across political, economic, and cultural spheres.
President Xi’s visit is expected to foster enhanced cooperation between China and Hungary, benefiting not only the two countries but also contributing to broader regional stability and development.
