President Xi Reiterates China’s Stance on Gaza and Ukraine Conflicts in Meeting with Macron

President Xi Jinping of China met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Monday, where he reiterated China’s firm stance on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the ongoing Ukraine crisis. In a joint press conference, President Xi emphasized China’s support for peaceful resolutions to both conflicts, urging the international community to take action.

On the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, President Xi called for an immediate, comprehensive, and sustainable ceasefire in Gaza. He highlighted the prolonged suffering in the region as a test for human conscience and stressed that China endorses the two-state solution as a means to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East. “China supports restoring to Palestine its legitimate national rights and restarting the two-state solution,” President Xi stated, adding that China backs Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations.

Regarding the Ukraine crisis, President Xi noted that although China is not a party to the conflict, it has been actively working towards a peaceful resolution. He mentioned that the special representative of the Chinese government on Eurasian affairs has embarked on a third round of diplomatic efforts to promote a political settlement. “History has proven time and again that, at the end of the day, conflicts can only be resolved through negotiation,” President Xi remarked.

He urged all parties involved to resume engagement and dialogue to build mutual trust. President Xi proposed the idea of holding an international peace conference, recognized by both Russia and Ukraine, to ensure equal participation and fair discussions on all peace plans. Additionally, he expressed China’s support for a balanced, effective, and sustainable security architecture in Europe.

President Xi also cautioned against using the Ukraine crisis to “scapegoat or smear a third country or to stoke a new Cold War.” He emphasized the importance of avoiding actions that could escalate tensions and derail efforts towards peace.
