China’s Special Envoy to Attend OIC Summit in Gambia

China is set to strengthen its engagement with the Islamic world as Zheng Jianbang, Special Representative of President Xi Jinping and Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, will attend the 15th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Banjul, Gambia, from May 4 to 5.

The announcement was made by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian on Tuesday. Zheng’s participation in the summit comes at the invitation of Gambian President Adama Barrow, reflecting the growing ties between China and OIC member states.

The OIC summit, which brings together leaders from over 50 Islamic countries, provides a platform to discuss key issues affecting the Muslim world, including economic development, cultural exchange, and regional security. China’s involvement underscores its commitment to fostering mutual understanding and cooperation with Islamic nations across Asia, Africa, and beyond.

This visit is expected to enhance bilateral relations between China and Gambia, as well as deepen China’s collaboration with the broader Islamic community. Topics of mutual interest, such as infrastructure development, trade, and investment opportunities, are likely to be on the agenda.

Analysts view this move as part of China’s broader strategy to engage with diverse global partners and to contribute to international efforts addressing common challenges.
