China Firmly Rejects U.S. Legislation on Taiwan Region and TikTok

Beijing, China — China’s Foreign Ministry has strongly condemned recent U.S. legislation that includes provisions for military aid to the Taiwan region and measures targeting the social media platform TikTok. In a press briefing on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that China has lodged stern representations with the United States, asserting that the legislation gravely infringes upon China’s sovereignty.

The contested legislation, signed into law by U.S. President Joe Biden on April 24, proposes significant military assistance to the Taiwan region and demands that TikTok divest from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, or face a nationwide ban in the U.S.

Lin emphasized that the military aid provisions seriously violate the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, sending a “seriously wrong signal” to separatist forces advocating for “Taiwan independence.” The spokesperson underscored China’s unwavering stance on the Taiwan issue, reaffirming that the Taiwan region is an inseparable part of China’s territory.

Regarding TikTok, Lin criticized the U.S. for undermining market economy principles and fair competition by targeting foreign companies under the guise of national security concerns. “This action reveals the U.S.’s hegemonic and bullying nature,” Lin remarked.

The legislation also addresses China’s role in the U.S. fentanyl crisis and includes threats of unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction over normal economic and trade exchanges between China and Iran. Lin described these measures as creating serious obstacles to China-U.S. cooperation in relevant areas.

“We urge the U.S. to respect China’s core interests and major concerns, and not to implement these negative articles concerning China,” Lin stated firmly. “Otherwise, China will take strong and resolute measures to safeguard our sovereignty, security, and development interests.”

The developments mark a further escalation in tensions between the two nations, with implications for global trade, technology, and regional security dynamics in Asia. Observers note that the situation warrants close attention from international stakeholders concerned about stability in the region.
