China and Peru Strengthen Ties to Boost China-Latin America Cooperation

In a significant move to bolster ties between China and Latin American and Caribbean nations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Peruvian Foreign Minister Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea Franco on Monday in Beijing. The two leaders agreed to enhance cooperation, aiming to inject new momentum into regional growth and deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership.

Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, emphasized China’s readiness to work closely with Peru to implement the important consensus reached by their heads of state. He highlighted the importance of carrying forward the traditional friendship and engaging in high-quality, mutually beneficial cooperation underpinned by strong political mutual trust.

“China stands ready to align development strategies with Peru, expedite the negotiations on upgrading the Free Trade Agreement, expand practical cooperation in various fields, and support Peru’s industrialization process,” Wang stated.

He also expressed China’s support for Peru in hosting this year’s APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting. Wang underscored the willingness to coordinate closely on major issues such as addressing climate change and implementing the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with the aim of firmly safeguarding the common interests of developing countries.

The Chinese foreign minister called for deepening cooperation in education, culture, tourism, science and technology, and youth exchanges to strengthen the ties between the two nations further.

Peruvian Foreign Minister Gonzalez-Olaechea affirmed Peru’s firm adherence to the one-China principle and expressed a strong desire to enhance solidarity and mutual trust with China. “We are eager to expand practical cooperation and achieve more fruitful results in Peru-China relations,” he said.

The two sides agreed to strengthen communication and coordination for the upcoming APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, aiming to inject new impetus into Asia-Pacific economic growth. They also pledged to deepen cooperation in infrastructure construction, digital economy, health, and green development. Both countries committed to firmly supporting each other on issues related to their core interests and making joint efforts to promote the political settlement of international disputes.
