China has lodged solemn representations with Japan over recent actions by Japanese lawmakers near the Diaoyu Islands, a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Japan stated on Sunday.
The China Coast Guard vessels have undertaken law enforcement measures in accordance with the law to safeguard China’s rights, the spokesperson noted.
According to media reports, five members of Japan’s National Diet, including Tomomi Inada, acting secretary-general of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, participated in an “investigation group” organized by the Ishigaki city government. They entered waters near the Diaoyu Islands for an “inspection” and expressed intentions to go ashore.
The spokesperson emphasized that the Diaoyu Islands and their affiliated islets are inherently part of China’s territory. China is firmly resolved to protect its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.
“China strongly urges Japan to adhere to the four-point principled agreement between our two nations, cease all political provocations, on-site disturbances, and public sensationalism,” the spokesperson said. “We call on Japan to return to the correct path of managing disputes and differences through dialogue and consultation, and to avoid any further escalation of the situation.”
