16 Years of Maritime Security: China’s PLA Navy Safeguards International Waters

Since December 2008, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy has been on a mission to ensure the safety of international maritime routes. Dispatching naval ships to the Gulf of Aden and the waters off Somalia, China has played a pivotal role in combating piracy and safeguarding global trade.

Over the past 16 years, the PLA Navy has sent 45 consecutive fleets, comprising 150 vessels and 35,000 personnel, to escort more than 7,200 Chinese and foreign vessels through some of the world’s most treacherous waters. This sustained effort reflects China’s commitment to international responsibilities and obligations.

By actively participating in vessel protection operations, the PLA Navy has not only ensured the safety of international waterways but also contributed to maintaining the security of surrounding seas. This ongoing mission highlights China’s pursuit of win-win maritime security, benefiting nations worldwide by promoting safe and open seas.
