In a significant move to bolster regional ties, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced China’s readiness to deepen comprehensive cooperation with Cambodia. During his visit on Sunday, Wang Yi met with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sok Chenda Sophea, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the China-Cambodia community with a shared future.
“China is willing to work with Cambodia to deepen strategic mutual trust, strengthen unity and cooperation, and promote greater development in building our shared future,” Wang stated. He highlighted the complex international environment as a catalyst for both nations to enhance high-level strategic guidance and ensure the right direction for their collaborative efforts.
Wang Yi outlined six major fields for enhanced cooperation: politics, production capacity, agriculture, energy, security, and people-to-people exchanges. He stressed the significance of practical cooperation, unity, and multilateral coordination to further solidify bilateral relations. “We should seize the opportunity of the 2024 China-Cambodia People-to-People Exchange Year to foster friendly feelings between our peoples and eradicate criminal activities such as online gambling, telecommunications fraud, and human trafficking,” he added.
Sok Chenda Sophea reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to the one-China policy and expressed enthusiasm for advancing friendly cooperation. “Cambodia looks forward to more cooperation projects with China and welcomes more Chinese companies to invest in our country,” he said. He also underscored Cambodia’s opposition to external forces causing regional disturbances and expressed a willingness to collaborate with China in safeguarding regional peace and stability.
The dialogue between the two nations signals a mutual dedication to enhancing China-ASEAN relations, advancing Lancang-Mekong cooperation, and steering East Asian cooperation in a positive direction.
