Chinese FM Wang Yi Calls for Palestine’s Prompt Admission to UN to Rectify Historical Injustice

Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called for the prompt admission of Palestine into the United Nations, stating that such a move would rectify a prolonged historical injustice. Speaking on Saturday during a press conference with his Papua New Guinea counterpart, Justin Tkatchenko, Wang emphasized the importance of addressing the Palestinian issue to uphold international peace and security.

“An early full UN membership for Palestine is a move to rectify prolonged historical injustice,” Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said. “This is an international obligation that should be fulfilled by every UN member state.”

Wang criticized the recent veto by the United States, which denied Palestine full membership in the United Nations. He noted that the international community has expressed profound dissatisfaction and disappointment over the U.S. decision. “The United States once again stands opposite to international morality and the international community, leaving another dishonorable record in history,” he remarked.

The Chinese foreign minister argued that Palestine’s full UN membership should not be contingent upon Israel-Palestine negotiations. Instead, he suggested that granting Palestine equal status as a UN member state would serve as a key step toward realizing the two-state solution and facilitate negotiations on an equal footing.

“It is not that conditions are not ripe for Palestine to fully become a UN member state, but that justice remains long overdue,” Wang stated. He called on the United States to act in accordance with its professed support for the two-state solution, urging it to contribute constructively to the peace process.

Wang Yi’s remarks highlight China’s position on the Palestinian issue and reflect a broader call for the United Nations to play a more active role in responding to global challenges. “The UN Security Council should do its duty to maintain international peace and security,” he added.
