China has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Palestine’s pursuit of full membership in the United Nations, following the United States’ veto of a draft resolution at the UN Security Council. The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Friday emphasized its commitment to working with all relevant parties to achieve an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and to advance the implementation of the two-state solution.
At a regular press briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian addressed the situation, noting that China’s permanent representative to the UN had elaborated on China’s position after the vote. “The establishment of an independent state has been the long-cherished wish of the Palestinian people for generations, and formally joining the UN is a key step in this historical process,” Lin said.
Lin criticized the U.S. veto, stating that it had “ruthlessly dashed” the decades-long dream of the Palestinian people. Despite this setback, he underlined that the urgent demand for an immediate ceasefire and the basic needs of Gaza’s civilians for humanitarian assistance cannot be denied.
“China calls on the international community to fully implement relevant resolutions adopted by the UN General Assembly and the Security Council, fully respect the will of the Palestinian people, return to the right track of the two-state solution, and establish an independent Palestinian state as soon as possible,” Lin urged.
The United States on Thursday vetoed a Palestinian request for full UN membership, blocking the draft resolution that recommended the 193-member UN General Assembly admit \”the State of Palestine\” as a full member. The resolution failed to be adopted due to the exclusive veto power held by the U.S. in the Security Council.
China’s firm stance highlights its ongoing role in Middle Eastern affairs and its advocacy for the rights of the Palestinian people. The development adds complexity to international efforts aimed at resolving the longstanding conflict and achieving lasting peace in the region.
