Jakarta, Indonesia — In a significant move to bolster regional cooperation, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Thursday, affirming China’s firm support for Indonesia’s role as a major country in Southeast Asia.
During the meeting, Wang Yi emphasized the importance of strengthening coordination between China and Indonesia to resist actions that foster division and confrontation in the region. “China firmly supports Indonesia in playing its role as a major country,” Wang Yi stated, highlighting the shared interest in promoting stability and prosperity.
He congratulated Indonesia on the successful general election, noting that both nations have reached an important consensus to elevate bilateral relations. “We look forward to working with Indonesia to advance our ties, inherit the past, and usher in a new era of development,” Wang Yi added.
The Chinese Foreign Minister underscored the desire to consolidate political mutual trust and set an example of unity among developing countries. He called for deepening practical cooperation and establishing a more just and equitable global governance system.
President Joko Widodo acknowledged China as a vital cooperative partner, noting the strong momentum of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. “Indonesia attaches great importance to its relationship with China,” he said. “We hope China will continue to support our infrastructure projects, such as high-speed railway construction, and welcome more Chinese businesses to invest in Indonesia.”
The President emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to working closely with China, adhering to the one-China policy, and jointly safeguarding regional peace and stability. He recognized China’s significant role in international and regional affairs, expressing eagerness to enhance collaboration.
Wang Yi also met with Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto and Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi to discuss further strengthening bilateral relations and exploring new avenues for cooperation.
The meetings signal a continued effort by both nations to enhance diplomatic ties and contribute to regional development. As two of Asia’s largest economies, China and Indonesia’s partnership is pivotal in shaping the future landscape of Southeast Asia.
