China has called on the United Kingdom to stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and to cease \”harboring and conniving with criminals and rioters\” that undermine China’s national security. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian made these remarks on Tuesday during a daily press briefing in response to a six-monthly report on Hong Kong released by the UK.
Lin reminded the UK that it has been nearly 27 years since Hong Kong returned to China, emphasizing that the so-called report \”disregards and distorts facts, grossly interferes in Hong Kong affairs and China’s internal affairs, and gravely violates the principles of international law and basic norms governing international relations.\”
\”China is strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposed to this,\” Lin stated.
He noted that since Hong Kong’s return, the Chinese government has fully and faithfully implemented the principles of \”One Country, Two Systems,\” \”Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong,\” and a high degree of autonomy. With the Law on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) coming into force, a solid barrier for national security has been established, Lin added.
The rights and freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kong residents in accordance with the law are better protected, enhancing their sense of happiness and security, according to Lin. He stated that Hong Kong has entered its best period for economic development, with its position as an international financial, shipping, and trading center more stable and promising.
Lin urged the UK to respect China’s sovereignty and to refrain from further interference in Hong Kong affairs.
