Beijing, October 2023 — China has urged the Philippines to steer clear of actions that could escalate tensions in the South China Sea, amid upcoming joint military exercises between the Philippines and the United States. The call for restraint comes as regional dynamics grow increasingly complex, with external powers involved in maritime activities.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian addressed the issue during a regular press briefing on Wednesday. Responding to questions about the scheduled drills next week, Lin emphasized the importance of regional stability and cautioned against involving countries from outside the area.
“The Philippine side should be clearly aware that inviting a country outside the region to flex muscles and provoke confrontation in the South China Sea will only escalate tensions and undermine regional stability,” Lin stated.
He further commented that attempts to bring external forces into the region under the guise of seeking security could lead to greater insecurity. “Such actions may result in the Philippines becoming a pawn in others’ strategic games,” he warned.
Lin called on the Philippines to halt any provocative activities at sea. He also urged nations outside the region to refrain from actions that could provoke confrontation in the South China Sea.
“China will continue to take necessary measures to firmly safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests,” Lin affirmed. “We are committed to maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea.”
The upcoming military exercises between the Philippines and the United States are seen by some analysts as a response to ongoing maritime disputes in the region. The South China Sea remains a focal point of territorial conflicts involving multiple countries with overlapping claims.
The situation highlights the delicate balance of power in the region and the complexities of international relations involving both regional and extra-regional players. Observers note that cooperation and dialogue among the concerned parties are crucial to prevent misunderstandings and maintain peace.
