German Chancellor Olaf Scholz underscored the critical importance of enhancing cooperation between Germany and China during his visit to Shanghai on Monday. Marking his third trip to the city, Scholz emphasized that collaborative efforts between the two nations are pivotal to shaping the future of the world.
During his brief stay, Chancellor Scholz engaged with students at Tongji University, visited the Asia-Pacific innovation center of German enterprise Covestro, and strolled along the historic Bund waterfront. His previous visits to Shanghai were in 2011 and 2015.
At Tongji University’s Jiading Campus, Scholz held an interactive dialogue with nearly 160 students. The discussion covered a range of topics, including youth exchanges between Germany and China, sustainable development, smart cities, and artificial intelligence. He expressed his appreciation for the university’s achievements in international talent cultivation and scientific and technological innovation.
“Tongji University serves as a bridge for cooperation in higher education between Germany and China,” Scholz remarked. “The collaborative spirit here embodies the potential of our nations working together towards common goals.”
The Chancellor’s visit to Covestro’s innovation center highlighted the significance of business and technological partnerships. Covestro, a leading materials manufacturer, exemplifies the successful integration of German innovation with China’s dynamic market. Scholz’s tour underscored the mutually beneficial nature of such enterprises in driving forward economic growth and sustainable practices.
Walking along the Bund, Scholz took in the blend of historical architecture and modern skyline that characterizes Shanghai’s rapid development. His experience symbolized the convergence of tradition and innovation—a theme reflective of the desired trajectory for Germany-China relations.
Scholz’s visit comes at a time when global cooperation is increasingly vital in addressing shared challenges such as climate change, public health, and economic stability. By fostering deeper ties with China, Germany aims to contribute to a more interconnected and resilient international community.
