China’s Top Legislator Zhao Leji Meets DPRK’s Choe Ryong Hae in Pyongyang

In a significant move to bolster bilateral ties, China’s top legislator Zhao Leji met with Choe Ryong Hae, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), in Pyongyang on Thursday.

Zhao, who serves as chairman of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee and is a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized the importance of the “China-DPRK Friendship Year” as this year marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. He expressed China’s willingness to work closely with the DPRK to maintain high-level exchanges, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, and promote people-to-people and cultural exchanges to further develop bilateral relations.

“Exchanges between our legislative bodies are a vital component of China-DPRK relations,” Zhao remarked, highlighting the need for increased cooperation between the legislative sectors of both countries.

Choe Ryong Hae, who is also a member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, hailed the longstanding friendship between the DPRK and China. He affirmed the DPRK’s commitment to deepening exchanges and cooperation in various fields to ensure the continuous development of DPRK-China collaboration.

The two leaders also exchanged views on international and regional affairs, as well as the situation on the Korean Peninsula, signaling a shared interest in promoting stability and peace in the region.
