China has called on Canada to respect the facts and abandon ideological biases, urging Ottawa to stop promoting what it describes as unfounded claims of “Chinese interference” that are damaging bilateral relations.
On Wednesday, the Chinese embassy in Canada issued a statement in response to remarks made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. During a public inquiry hearing on “foreign interference,” Trudeau accused China of attempting to “meddle in Canadian elections.”
“China is very dissatisfied with and firmly opposes those remarks,” a spokesperson from the embassy stated. “China maintains a longstanding policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of other nations and has no interest in interfering in Canada’s internal affairs.”
The spokesperson emphasized that China has repeatedly communicated its position to the Canadian side. “Some politicians in Canada, driven by their own interests, are attempting to target China in the public inquiry, trying to label and cast aspersions on China,” the spokesperson added. “The testimonies, characterized with terms like ‘highly likely,’ ‘probable,’ and ‘suspicious,’ fail to provide any substantial evidence.”
“This once again demonstrates that the so-called foreign interference public inquiry is nothing but a political farce orchestrated by Canada,” the spokesperson said.
Allegations Strain China-Canada Relations
The embassy’s statement pointed out that for a long time, the Canadian side has provoked China on major issues concerning China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, such as Taiwan, Xinjiang, Hong Kong, and Xizang (Tibet). The spokesperson noted that Canada has “connived and supported various anti-China separatist activities” and that Canadian media has reported on Canadian security intelligence agencies surveilling Chinese diplomatic missions and personnel in Canada.
“It is quite clear who is interfering in other countries’ internal affairs,” the spokesperson remarked.
Call for Constructive Dialogue
China’s appeal to Canada underscores the need for both nations to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve misunderstandings and improve bilateral relations. The embassy urged Canada to “respect the facts, abandon ideological biases, and stop hyping up the lies about ‘Chinese interference’ and poisoning China-Canada relations.”
