Chinese Peacekeepers in DRC Awarded UN Peace Medal for Outstanding Service

On Tuesday, the 27th Chinese Peacekeeping Contingent to the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) was honored with the UN Peace Medal, recognizing their outstanding contributions to peace and stability in the region.

The ceremony took place at the camp of the Chinese engineering company on the outskirts of Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province. The event was attended by high-ranking officials from MONUSCO and local dignitaries, applauding the dedication of the Chinese peacekeepers.

Bintou Keita, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the DRC and head of MONUSCO, praised the Chinese peacekeepers for their exemplary service over the past 21 years. “The Chinese contingent has demonstrated unwavering commitment and professionalism in fulfilling their mandate. Their efforts have significantly contributed to the peace and development of South Kivu,” she remarked.

Keita also expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for its long-standing support to MONUSCO. “Since 2003, Chinese peacekeepers have been instrumental in supporting our mission. Their presence has greatly aided in our disengagement processes and the protection of civilians,” she added.

The Chinese peacekeeping contingent has been involved in various tasks, including constructing infrastructure, providing medical services to local communities, and supporting the mission’s logistics operations.

The award of the UN Peace Medal serves as a testament to the Chinese peacekeepers’ dedication to promoting peace and stability in the DRC. Their contributions have not only strengthened the bond between China and the DRC but have also showcased China’s commitment to global peacekeeping efforts.
