China and the Bahamas Deepen Bilateral Ties in High-Level Talks

China’s top legislator, Zhao Leji, held significant talks in Beijing with Patricia Deveaux, Speaker of the House of Assembly, and Julie LaShell Adderley, President of the Senate of the Bahamian parliament. The meeting marked a pivotal moment in the 27-year diplomatic relationship between China and the Bahamas, highlighting mutual commitments to enhance cooperation across various sectors.

Zhao, chairman of the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, praised the progress made since establishing diplomatic ties. He noted the continuous expansion of practical cooperation, the strengthening of people-to-people exchanges, and the mutual support on issues concerning each nation’s core interests. “China is willing to work with the Bahamas to deepen cooperation in various fields and accelerate the development of bilateral relations to bring increased benefits to both countries and peoples,” Zhao stated.

Emphasizing the importance of the one-China principle as the political foundation of their relationship, Zhao expressed appreciation for the Bahamas’ firm adherence to this policy. He invited the Bahamas to join the Belt and Road Initiative, aiming to open broader avenues for mutually beneficial cooperation and shared development. Zhao also encouraged the Bahamas to participate in China’s three global initiatives, collaborating to contribute to global peace, stability, development, and prosperity.

Addressing climate change, Zhao acknowledged the special concerns of small island nations like the Bahamas. He affirmed China’s readiness to strengthen communication and coordination in tackling environmental challenges, reinforcing the commitment to global sustainability efforts.

On parliamentary exchanges, Zhao highlighted the vital role legislative bodies play in bilateral relations. He expressed the NPC’s willingness to enhance friendly exchanges with the Bahamian House of Assembly and Senate at various levels. “We will create a sound legal environment for both countries to strengthen trade and investment cooperation and expand personnel exchanges,” Zhao said, underscoring the importance of safeguarding the common interests of developing countries.

In response, Deveaux and Adderley reaffirmed the Bahamas’ firm commitment to the one-China principle and expressed admiration for the achievements of the Chinese people. They extended gratitude for China’s selfless assistance in the Bahamas’ economic and social development. The Bahamian parliament leaders voiced their eagerness to strengthen exchanges with the NPC, aiming to promote bilateral cooperation in economy, trade, culture, and legislation.

This high-level meeting signifies a deepening of ties between China and the Bahamas, setting the stage for enhanced collaboration and mutual growth. Both nations are poised to work closely on shared interests, contributing positively to regional and global affairs.
