China has called on Israel to fully implement the United Nations resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza, emphasizing the urgency of alleviating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
Speaking at the UN Security Council on Friday, Dai Bing, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict and its devastating impact on civilians. “We urge Israel to immediately implement the requirements of the resolution and cease its military offensive against Gaza and its collective punishment of Gaza civilians,” Dai stated.
Dai highlighted that the tragedy unfolding in Gaza is a test of humanity’s conscience and the credibility of the UN Security Council. He called on major countries to play an active role in promoting the implementation of the resolution and supported the Council in taking “any necessary actions” to ensure compliance.
The Chinese envoy stressed that the humanitarian disaster in Gaza has reached a critical point. He urged Israel to lift the blockade and remove obstacles to humanitarian access, including fully opening the Rafah crossing and all other land crossings to guarantee rapid, adequate, and safe delivery of humanitarian supplies to the region.
Dai condemned attacks against humanitarian transport vehicles and called on Israel to abide by international law and international humanitarian law. He emphasized the need for cooperation with humanitarian agencies to facilitate assistance and protect humanitarian workers.
Reiterating China’s longstanding support for the “two-state solution,” Dai asserted that establishing an independent State of Palestine is essential for breaking the vicious cycle of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He urged the Security Council to take action towards this goal and reaffirmed China’s support for Palestine to become a full member state of the UN.
On March 25, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants. The resolution, which also calls for the unconditional release of all hostages, was passed with 14 votes in favor and one abstention by the United States.
According to UN officials, the conflict, which began six months ago, has resulted in over 32,000 deaths and 75,000 injuries. Additionally, 1.7 million people, constituting 75 percent of Gaza’s population, have been displaced from their homes and are living in precarious conditions.
In a related development, the UN Human Rights Council on Friday adopted a resolution urging accountability for potential war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. The resolution also calls on all nations to cease the sale and transfer of arms and military equipment to Israel. Of the 47 member nations, 28 voted in favor, 13 abstained, and six opposed the resolution, including the United States and Germany. China voted in support of the resolution.
